The new book of our faculty member, Assist. Prof. Thseen Nazir, “The Psychology of Phubbing: Social Disconnection in a Hyperconnected World” has been published by Istanbul University Press, on 29th January, 2026 . The book addresses the psychological and social dimensions of smartphone use on interpersonal communication and social relationships within an academic framework, at a time when the effects of digitalization on daily life are steadily increasing. Providing a contemporary perspective to the literature, the study explains how technology use is transforming interpersonal interaction processes.
The behavior of phubbing, which has emerged as individuals increasingly turn to mobile devices instead of face-to-face communication in today’s world, is addressed in the book from multiple perspectives. Assist. Prof. Nazir analyzes the emergence of this behavior, its psychological foundations, and its long-term effects on interpersonal communication within a scientific framework.
The book begins by examining how the concept of phubbing was first introduced into the literature through the “Stop Phubbing” campaign conducted in Australia in 2012. Formed by combining the words “phone” and “snubbing,” this concept refers to the act of ignoring people around oneself in favor of using a smartphone. Assist. Prof. Nazir’s study demonstrates that this behavior is becoming increasingly widespread across different age groups and cultures today.
The work also examines in detail the effects of excessive digital connectivity on communication quality, emotional bonds, and social interaction norms. In this respect, the book serves as an important resource for academics, researchers, and students working in the fields of psychology, communication studies, and digital society research.
We congratulate Assist. Prof. Thseen Nazir on this valuable academic work and wish that the new book will make significant contributions to the scientific community and the literature.
