A Lesson at the Heart of History: Visit to the Süleymaniye Complex
Senior students from the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling experienced the legacy of education from the Ottoman Empire to the present day through a visit to the Süleymaniye Complex, organized as part of the History of Turkish Education course.

On Wednesday, May 7, fourth-year students from the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling at our university’s School of Education visited our Süleymaniye Campus, which also hosts various programs and events, as part of the History of Turkish Education course.

Guided by Assoc. Prof. Ayşe Dilşad Yakut, the visit offered a hands-on learning experience that allowed students to explore Ottoman educational institutions on-site. Research Assistants Dilara Maraba and Nagehan Pakdamar Tüzgen also accompanied the group.

During the visit, students gave presentations on the educational structures of the complex—such as the Dârülhadis, Dârülkurra, and Sâlis Madrasah—as well as topics like the Ottoman education system and teacher-student relationships in madrasah education. The presentations focused on the role and significance of the Süleymaniye Complex in the Ottoman educational system, institutional structures, and pedagogical dynamics.

The presentations were evaluated through peer and faculty assessments via the Canvas LMS system. Throughout the process, Res. Assist. Nagehan Pakdamar Tüzgen enriched the course content with insights into the history and architecture of the complex, while Res. Assist. Dilara Maraba provided active support during the preparation and implementation phases.

Held in the unique atmosphere of the Süleymaniye Complex, the event enabled students to deeply understand the educational philosophy and heritage that has evolved from the Ottoman era to the present day.
