With the aim of gaining an on-site perspective on the history of education, senior students from the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counseling at Ibn Haldun University’s School of Education held their EDU 421: History of Turkish Education course outside the classroom this week, at the historic Sâlis Madrasa, located within the Süleymaniye Madrasas and also home to our Alliance of Civilizations Institute.
In the first part of the course, accompanied by our Research Assistant Dilara Maraba, students had the opportunity to explore the foundational elements of the Ottoman madrasa education system on site. Research Assistant Maraba provided insights into the historical foundations of madrasa education as well as the learning and teaching processes within this system, enabling students to gain a deeper understanding of the educational structure of the period. In this section, students also formed discussion groups to analyze the key components of the Ottoman madrasa system and compare them with contemporary educational approaches.
In the second part, the class was taken a step further with the expert knowledge and perspective of Assist. Prof. Nagehan Pakdamar Tüzgen. Assist. Prof. Pakdamar Tüzgen discussed the intellectual and practical background of the madrasah educational tradition, highlighting its historical continuity and its intellectual connection with the present day. She emphasized not only the theoretical aspects of education but also its practical reflections, underlining the subtleties of the understanding of knowledge within the madrasah culture.
This field trip-based course enabled students to observe the history of education on site, allowing them to connect past and present educational approaches and to develop a holistic perspective on the phenomenon of education.
